Post-Mortems Reveal Obvious Risk at Banks

MSM: New York Times - November 19, 2009

At bank after bank, the coroners of the financial crisis are discovering that regulators knew lenders were engaging in hazardous practices but failed to act.

In a typical example, examiners with the FDIC found problems with Haven Trust's underwriting practices in 2002. Yet it let the bank grow its portfolio of risky commercial real estate loans by an astounding 40% annually over the next several years. Not until August 2008 did examiners tell Haven to raise its capital cushion. It waited until September 2008 to issue a memorandum of understanding ordering the bank to limit its concentration of risky loans.

"By the time the M.O.U. was issued in September 2008, Haven’s failure was all but inevitable."

Volcker: Accounting Panel Needs to be Independent

Blog: The Big Picture - November 19, 2009

Paul Volcker: A proposal to give banking regulators authority to block accounting standards is "a terrible idea."

If this passes, there will be no end to the shenanigans banks can play in the next crisis. As we have seen, many financial institutions have taken egregious advantage of the crisis they created.

New Housing: Important; Existing Home Sales: Irrelevant

Blog: Calculated Risk - November 19, 2009

  • Residential investment is the best leading indicator for the economy.

  • Residential investment will not recover rapidly because of the large overhang of existing vacant housing units.

  • Existing home sales are largely irrelevant for the economy.
    • The only contribution from existing home sales to the economy are some commissions and fees. That is good news for real estate agents and mortgage brokers, but not for the overall economy.

Housing Chart Shows Things Are Still Getting Worse

Blog: Clusterstock - November 19, 2009

The fundamental problem in the housing market is still getting worse, not better. In the bubble years, we just built too many damn houses.

This overbuilding has led to record vacancy rates.

Son of Pine Gate

Blog: _Other - November 19, 2009

The debtor won approval to use bidding procedures that denied the lenders a right to credit bid under §363(k) or exercise their right to an "1111(b) election," under the theory that the debtor's proposed plan was providing the lenders with the "indubitable equivalent".

It seems clearly problematic to create an exception to what I have previously described as the fundamental secured creditor protections against "lowball" sales.

OECD Sees Bumpy Path to Recovery

MSM: New York Times - November 19, 2009

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development on Thursday delivered a cautious assessment of the global economy.

"The upturn in the major non-OECD countries, especially in Asia and particularly in China, is now a well-established source of strength for the more feeble OECD recovery."

Boeing May Lose $7.5 Billion Brazil Sale as Senate Blocks Envoy

MSM: Bloomberg - November 19, 2009

LeMieux’s put his hold on the nomination immediately after Senator Jim DeMint, a South Carolina Republican, lifted his own three-month objection.

The delay may help France’s Dassault Aviation beat Boeing in the competition to sell Brazil 36 warplanes and cost thousands of US jobs.

Why Does The FAA Flight Plan System Keep Failing?

Blog: Clusterstock - November 19, 2009

This is the third time in a little over three years that a glitch in the FAA system that collects airlines' flight plans has caused massive delays.

And as far as we can tell, there's never been an adequate explanation for the outages.

How UBS chooses the names it will give the IRS

Blog: Felix Salmon - November 18, 2009

It will still be interesting to see whether UBS ends up handing over to the US government any information that the IRS hasn’t already been given voluntarily. My guess is that of the 4,450 names, only a tiny fraction will be unknown to the IRS at this point.

Obama, China, and Wishful Thinking About American Jobs

MSM: _Other - November 18, 2009

China is heading in the opposite direction of "rebalancing." Its productive capacity keeps soaring, but Chinese consumers are taking home a shrinking proportion of the total economy.

The larger explanation for Chinese frugality is that the nation is oriented to production, not consumption. China wants to become the world's preeminent producer nation. It also wants to take the lead in the production of advanced technologies. The U.S. would like to retain the lead, but our economy is oriented to consumption rather than production.
